Blessings From the
Father's Hands

As I was eating breakfast one morning I was dipping my warm flour tortilla into an egg yolk, when I recalled a childhood memory. I would sit in my worn out crib which imprisoned me from the world that was before me. Meanwhile, my father, who was eating his homemade tortillas, refried beans, over easy eggs, and hot sauce would dip a piece of his tortilla into his egg yolk and sprinkle salt on it as he handed me this treat to nibble on.

Since then every time I eat flour tortillas with my morning meal I recall those memories of my father who loved me enough to share his breakfast with me. I know that not all of us have pleasant memories of our fathers. Perhaps some of us don’t even have any memories at all. Or we have grown up with a father who was absent in our childhood. But one thing is certain, we now have a heavenly Father who not only sits on the throne of heaven but who is also is concern with every detail of our lives.

I think of the time that Judas sat next to Jesus ready to betray Him. He took his bread and dipped it into the wine at the last supper. Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.” (Matthew 26:23). Then soon after the dipping of the bread Judas sold his relationship with Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. That dipping of the bread was a very costly one. It was the betrayal of a friend. This was to be the last meal that Jesus would have with His disciples before His death. And the last time Judas would hear the words from Jesus calling him friend.

The dipping of the bread into your food was common in biblical times. It was not unusual to eat with your fingers and nibble on morsels of food... But Mexican flour tortillas dipped into egg yolk may not be the modern day meal you would be hoping for. Yet as a child, I sat in my crib being offered an appetizer from the hand of my father. How many times does Father God hand us treats of blessings while we are lacking maturity and feel like a child? Would you have excused the morsel of blessing if you had been the one sitting in that crib?

All of us need to be like a small child and surrender ourselves into the arms of Christ leaving our imprisonment of past memories behind. ”Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:4) Many of us may find ourselves imprisoned in our own cribs of discouragement and despair. Jailed by the bars of life that holds us back from experiencing the abundant life of Christ. Yet God the Father is extending His hand toward us and it is filled with treats of blessings. They may not look like what you expected like the tortilla that was dipped in the egg. But our Father God knows what we have need of even before we ask. “For your Father knows what you need before you ask Him." (Matthew 6:8)

Won’t you reach out and take His blessings? Extend your hand towards Him and let His love release you of the imprisonment that you find yourself in. He will give you much more than warm tortillas or refried beans. He will pour into your life His love and His confidence so you may live a life of victory for Him.

Do not ignore the blessings that He hands you. Even if they come wrapped in a different package then you are use to, they come straight from the hand of God. After all, warm tortillas can be a wonderful breakfast. But the blessings that God the Father gives us, makes a wonderful life.
